What a wonderful week of cycling and community events. The Tour de Georgia presented by AT&T continues to amaze, to entertain and to surpass expectations.
The best cyclists in the world were treated to true Southern hospitality and a first-class race course all across our beautiful state. Over half a million spectators were thrilled to see first hand why these athletes are among the best in the world. Many of these spectators visited Georgia for the first time, from all across the United States and other countries, and the Tour was a vehicle for them to discover the beauty and splendor of our state.
And the Tour provided the largest rolling Health & Wellness Expo across the state during race week. This is indeed one way the Tour gives back to the community, by sharing information in an engaging way to help adults and children realize the benefits of exercise and healthy lifestyles.
One of the highlights of the Tour was our partnership with the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. The Tour and our sponsors were able to raise a record amount of funds this year for both Children's and the Georgia Cancer Coalition - over $500,000!
Thank you to all our Volunteers and Host Communities who rolled out the red carpet for the start lines and finish lines during race week. Thank you to over 4,000 volunteers, representing all 50 states, who donated many hours and many days to making this event successful. Thank you to all our public safety officials, Medalist Sports and staff who made the 600-miles of racing compelling and safe. Thank you to all our event sponsors, from AT&T as our presenting sponsor, to the Founding Partners, official sponsors and suppliers, for making this the best Tour in the six-year history of the event.
I can’t wait for 2009!
In Good Health,
Casey Cagle, Lt. Gov. of Georgia
