Forestar Real Estate Group, listed on the NYSE under the symbol
FOR, has deep and long-standing ties to Georgia, a region where it owns over 300,000 acres of land. These north Georgia holdings represent a substantial portion of the company’s overall
holdings of 373,000 acres of real estate in 10 states and 13 markets. In addition to the real estate acres, Forestar owns 622,000 net mineral acres in Texas, Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama.
Forestar operates two primary business segments – real estate and natural resources. The real estate segment focuses on entitlement and strategic investments in development and
acquisitions. The natural resources segment consists of activities associated with maximizing value of its timber and mineral interests. The company operates multiple offices, including five in
and around Atlanta, Georgia.
A commitment to deliver balanced and comprehensive solutions for
a wide variety of stakeholders is a core operating value at Forestar. This commitment, coupled with a seasoned team of real estate professionals, drives the company to gain an in-depth
understanding of each community’s unique values, needs and lifestyle requirements. These solutions appropriately balance the needs of infrastructure, community design, economic
development, conservation, open space and parks. To support its commitment to balanced solutions, Forestar maintains separate operating departments for Economic Development; Conservation and
Stewardship; and Environmental.
As part of its long legacy of environmental stewardship and
sustainable development, Forestar participates in several voluntary programs including the Sustainable Forestry InitiativeSM (SFI). In January, Forestar employees accepted the 2007 Forestry for
Wildlife Partnership Award, a program administered by the Georgia Department of Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division. The cooperative program, which promotes blending wildlife
conservation into land management practices, has included more than 338,000 Forestar acres since 2000. Forestar’s environmental programs also provide excellent streamside management zone
protections, protect valuable wildlife habitat, and maintain aesthetic qualities of the landscape.
Forestar’s History
Forestar’s origins date back to the 1955 incorporation of Lumbermen’s Investment Corporation, which in 2006 changed its name to Forestar (USA) Real Estate Group Inc. In 1991,
Forestar and Cousins Properties formed Temco Associates, LLC as a venture to develop residential sites in Paulding County, and in 2002 Forestar and Cousins formed CL Realty, L.L.C. as a venture
to develop residential and mixed-use communities in Texas and across the southeastern U.S. These ventures continue today and remain a part of Forestar’s portfolio of investments.
Recently, Forestar formed a venture with The Jones Company and Bullock Mannelly Partners covering 17,000 acres around Atlanta. As part of the venture formation, Forestar participated in the
establishment of a 7,000 acre Wildlife Management Area in the Paulding Forest. Forestar Real Estate Group became an independent public company in December 2007 when it spun off from
Temple-Inland.
